Here at the
farm we lost an important icon recently. A rather large oak
tree in our front yard had to be methodically taken down and removed
because it became sick and was mostly dead.
After consulting with a couple trained arborists we learned that the tree was too far gone to do anything to save it.
When Mike checked on the chickens early this morning, he found the very first Araucana eggs we've seen from our flock. The larger of the two pale eggs was a very pretty light blue, and the smaller one was a bit more washed out, but still bluish. The dark egg at the bottom is a Cuckoo Maran egg: chocolate brown. The light brown one is probably a Rhode Island Red or maybe a Buff Orpington.
These four were followed by another six, bringing today's total to 10 eggs, the most we've seen in one day so far.

We shopped the removal around quite a bit to find a lower price, and part of the deal we got with the company that did finally take it down involved them removing all the wood. They were able to sell it somewhere to offset their removal costs. We kept some of the smaller branches to use as firewood this winter. Mike is planning to seed the spot where the stump was removed soon.
